미국은 북한의 인권 상황과 강제송환된 탈북자와 난민에 대한 처우에 대해 깊이 우려하고 있다고 국무부가 밝혔다고 미국소리방송이 보도 했다.

[녹취 캐티나 애덤스] “The United States remains deeply concerned about the human rights situation in North Korea and the treatment of North Korean refugees and asylum seekers in cases where they are forcibly repatriated.”

캐티나 애덤스 국무부 동아시아태평양 담당 대변인은 18일 ‘VOA’와의 전화통화에서 지난달 탈북자들이 베트남 몽카이 지역에서 붙잡혀 중국으로 추방됐다는 보도를 알고 있다면서 이같이 말했다.

이들은 지난달 중순 중국을 출발해 베트남으로 넘어갔지만 불심 검문에 걸려 추방됐고, 곧바로 중국 공안에 붙잡힌 뒤 북송 위기에 처한 것으로 알려졌다.

애덤스 대변인은 이와 관련해 역내 모든 나라들이 영토 내로 들어온 북한 난민과 망명 신청자들을 보호할 것을 촉구한다고 강조했습니다.

[녹취 캐티나 애덤스] “We urge all countries in the region to protect North Korean refugees and asylum seekers within their territories.We continue to work with other countries in the region and international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Council and UNHCR, to protect North Korean refugees and find durable solutions for them.”

애덤스 대변인은 북한 난민들을 보호하고 이들을 위한 장기적 해결책을 찾기 위해 역내 국가들은 물론 유엔 인권이사회와 유엔난민기구 등 국제기구들과 계속 협력하고 있다고 말했다.
