미국의 목표는 한반도의 완전한 비핵화이며 이를 검증 가능한 방식으로 확인하는 것이라고 백악관이 밝혔다. 미-북 회담은 6월 12일에 열릴 것으로 기대하고 있다며, 사전 실무팀으로부터 긍정적인 보고를 듣고 있다고 미국소리 방송이 보도했다.

백악관은 트럼프 대통령과 북한 지도자 김정은의 만남을 계속 준비하고 있다며 대통령이 말했듯 만남이 이뤄지면 미국은 분명히 준비돼 있을 것이라고 밝혔다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “We are continuing to prepare for the meeting between the President and the North Korean leader. As the President says if it happens we will certainly be ready. We have got not only the meeting that you just have mentioned, Secretary Pompeo is meeting with the president currently, and when he finishes that meeting he will be headed to New York for dinner tonight, as well as day full of meetings tomorrow, the advance team led by deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin met with the North Korean team in Singapore earlier today, and again expected to do so tomorrow.”
새라 샌더스 백악관 대변인은 30일 정례브리핑에서 폼페오 국무장관과 김영철 북한 노동당 부위원장 회동의 의제를 묻는 질문에 이같이 답했다.
이어 폼페오 장관이 현재 트럼프 대통령과 만나고 있다며 이날 뉴욕에서 (김 부위원장과) 만찬을 가진 뒤 다음날 하루 종일 만남을 갖는다고 설명했다
김영철 북한 노동당 부위원장과 북한 고위 관리들이 30일 미국 뉴욕 JFK 공항에 도착한 후 계류장을 걸어 나오고 있다.
그러면서 조 헤이긴 백악관 부비서실장이 이끄는 미국의 사전 협상팀도 이날 싱가포르에서 북한 측과 만남을 가졌고 다음날에도 만남이 이어질 예정이라고 덧붙였다.
성 김 필리핀주재 미국 대사가 이끄는 미국 대표단도 이날 (판문점) 비무장지대에서 북한 당국자들을 만났다며 이들의 대화도 계속될 것이라고 말했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “We also have reports back from the DMZ, the U.S. delegations led by Ambassador Sung Kim met with North Korean officials earlier today as well, and their talks will continue. So far readout from these meetings has been positive and we will continue to move forward.”
이런 만남들에서 나오고 있는 정보들은 현재까지 긍정적이라며 계속 앞으로 나아갈 것이라고 설명했다.
샌더스 대변인은 북한 비핵화 계획이 구체화되고 있느냐는 질문에, 현재 대화는 한반도의 비핵화에 초점을 두고 있다고 말했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “The conversation is focusing on denuclearization of the peninsula. That is what this ongoing conversation is taking place now will be centered on as well as the summit that will take place in Singapore. And we are going to continue as long as that is the part of the discussion, we are going to continue to shoot for the June 12th and expect to do that.”
현재 진행되는 대화들뿐만 아니라 싱가포르에서 열릴 미-북 정상회담의 초점은 여기에 맞춰질 것이라는 겁니다.
이어 한반도의 비핵화가 논의의 일부분이라면 (회담 개최 시기를) 계속해 6월 12일을 목표로 두고 진행할 것이라고 설명했다.
샌더스 대변인은 미-북 회담 개최 여부를 언제까지 결정할 것이냐는 질문에 앞서 말했듯 6월 12일에 열릴 것으로 기대하고 또 준비가 돼 있을 것이라면서, 그렇지 않다면 가령 7월 12일에 회담이 열리게 되더라도 준비가 돼 있을 것이라고 답했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “In terms of North Korea, as I have said, we are preparing and expect that to take place on June 12th, and we will be ready if it does on June 12th, and if it is not, we will be ready if it takes on July 12th.”
샌더스 대변인은 트럼프 대통령이 핵무기에 추가로 생화학무기 등 다른 대량살상무기 문제도 제기할 것이냐는 질문에 회담에서 논의될 모든 의제들에 대해 앞서나가지 않을 것이라고 답했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “I am not going to get ahead of all of the topics that may come up. The priority focus that we have discussed in the ongoing conversation with the Secretary Pompeo, as well as at the DMZ, are focused on the denuclearization of the peninsula, but certainly I think that the number of topics are likely to be discussed at the summit.”
폼페오 장관이 현재 나누고 있는 대화와 비무장지대에서 진행 중인 대화들은 한반도 비핵화에 최우선적으로 집중했다고 거듭 강조했다.
미-북 회담에서는 다양한 의제들이 당연히 논의될 것 같다고 설명했다.
샌더스 대변인은 북한과 비핵화를 논의하는 과정에서 미국의 핵 자산 역시 포함되느냐는 질문에 미국이 집중할 부분은 당연히 한반도의 완전한 비핵화와 이를 검증 가능하게 확인하는 것이 될 것이라고 답했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “I am not going to get into details or negotiate that here. Certainly our focus is going to be on total denuclearization of the peninsula and verifiable confirmation of that. Beyond that I can’t get into any details.”
이어 미국의 자산은 다뤄지지 않을 것이냐는 질문이 이어지자 그렇지 않을 것이라고 거듭 확인했다.
샌더스 대변인은 미국이 중국에 관세 등을 계속 부과하는 게 북한 문제 해결에 악영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 지적에 트럼프 대통령은 시진핑 중국 국가주석과 좋은 관계를 이어가고 있지만 트럼프 대통령이 우려하는 건 중국이 수 십 년 동안 계속해온 불공정한 무역 활동을 멈춰야 한다는 점이라고 밝혔다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “The president continues to have good relationship with president Xi, but what the president is concerned about is making sure he stops unfair trade practices that China has engaged in for decades.”
북한 문제와 관련해 중국과 계속 협력하고 대화를 갖고 있다며 이런 점들이 계속되길 기대한다고 강조했다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “At the same time, we are continuing to work with China, continuing to have conversation when it comes to North Korea, and we hope that those will continue.”
한편 샌더스 대변인은 이날 싱가포르 정부가 미-북 회담 준비에 많은 도움을 주고 있다며 감사의 뜻을 전했다.
