Iraqi officials have raised a new flag over the Cabinet building in Baghdad in a symbolic break with the country's war-torn past.
Officials hoisted the new banner today (Tuesday). The flag keeps the three stripes of red, white and black, and features calligraphy of the Arabic words meaning "God is Great."
The Iraqi parliament voted recently to remove the three-star symbol of Saddam Hussein's ousted Baath Party from the center of the flag.
The country's Kurdish minority prompted the changes, threatening not to fly the flag in the largely autonomous northern Kurdistan region. Kurdish officials protested that the flag was a reminder of Saddam's brutality toward the Kurds.
The new flag is valid for a year until the country's parliament votes on a permanent replacement.
