The director of U.S. national intelligence says he is concerned that al-Qaida in Iraq is shifting its resources to attack outside that country.
Mike McConnell issued the warning today (Tuesday) to U.S. lawmakers in an annual assessment of potential security threats. However, he said recent intelligence suggests that fewer than 100 members of the al-Qaida group have left Iraq to establish terrorist cells in other countries.
McConnell said U.S. forces have cracked down on al-Qaida in Iraq. He said al-Qaida continues to use Pakistan's tribal areas as staging grounds to train operatives for strikes in Pakistan, the Middle East, Africa and the United States.
